Verify vs provision — the real divide
Most of the names here — Privy, Dynamic, Web3Auth, thirdweb, Magic — are, at heart, wallet-creation platforms. Their headline product turns an email or social login into an embedded wallet, which means they run the key infrastructure to do it (MPC, threshold signatures, Shamir shares inside secure enclaves). That's genuinely valuable for onboarding non-crypto users — and it's a custody surface and a key-management responsibility.
SIWE and Proof Holdings sit on the other side of the line: verify a wallet the user already controls, and touch no keys at all. SIWE is the open standard for it; Proof productizes the same verify-don't-provision idea as a managed API with a portable proof token — across phone, email, and domain today, and wallet soon. Yes — most of them issue verifiable tokens

Dynamic uses RS256 with a published JWKS; Web3Auth issues an ES256 identity token with a public JWKS and a documented "wallet ownership" purpose; Magic's DID token verifies via ecRecover with no network call; thirdweb Auth is a SIWE-signed JWT; Privy issues an ES256 JWT. "Only Proof gives you a verifiable token" is not true, and we won't say it.
What actually distinguishes Proof Holdings is narrower and real: its token is a neutral proof of control — "control of wallet X was verified," issued by a party that isn't your own app — rather than a session scoped to a specific app or environment; it comes with no key infrastructure to trust; and it's one proof format across assets, not a wallet-only credential. One category gets miscategorized into wallet verification constantly, so to be clear: World ID, Civic, and BrightID are proof-of-personhood, not wallet-control. They answer "is there one unique real human here?" — World ID via an iris scan at the Orb plus zero-knowledge proofs, Civic via a video-selfie liveness credential, BrightID via a social graph. None performs a cryptographic key-control challenge on a wallet you already own.
That's a different job, not a competitor. In fact World ID deliberately avoids binding to a persistent wallet for privacy.
